Community

Expat groups are useful. They are also a sampling bias.

Ask an expat forum whether a city is “easy” and you will hear from people who had a problem last week. That is valuable. It is also not the same as a representative sample.

The threads worth saving are specific: which office, which document, which neighborhood, which month. “Portugal is impossible now” is not a data point. “The AIMA appointment we booked in March moved to November” is.

A few filters that keep community advice usable:

  • Prefer posts that name a visa type and a year.
  • Discount anything that sells a package in the same breath as the advice.
  • Look for the boring replies from people who have already been there two years. They argue less and mention grocery prices, pediatricians, and winter light.
  • Use official groups (city hall, social security, tax authority) when the question is procedural.

Nessel’s neighborhood and visa tools exist so you can compare a path before you outsource the decision to the loudest thread. Then the groups become what they are good at: texture, warnings, and the name of the form nobody told you about.
