Life abroad

A long stay has a quieter calendar than a tourist trip

Visit-mode planning optimizes for the highlight reel: a view, a restaurant list, a two-week weather window. A residence year is mostly Tuesdays.

People who stay tend to reverse the order of questions:

  1. Can I legally remain, work, or study for the stretch I have in mind?
  2. Can I sleep in a neighborhood that matches how I actually spend evenings and weekends?
  3. Do the national price level and the local housing market leave enough room after tax?
  4. Then — and only then — the beautiful parts.

That is also why Home Base is a news feed and your account is the plan. The feed is for the wider weather: rule changes, community patterns, statistics. The account is for the path you saved, the checklist, and the destination you highlighted.

If you are early, read for orientation. If you already have a country in mind, read for what would invalidate the plan — a visa threshold, a school calendar, a rental custom — and go confirm it on the official page.
